Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has successfully resolved a “technical issue” with his childhood coach and mentor Nazmul Abedeen Faheem. He rejoined the squad on Thursday having spent a few days in Dhaka. Ahead of BAN vs NED on Saturday, his return will boost the squad that has already lost four consecutive games in Cricket World Cup.
After the losses, Bangladesh are virtually out of Cricket World Cup semifinal race.
“He had some technical issue which he needed to sort out by meeting his coach physically. He’s rejoined the team tonight,” Mohammed Jalal Yunus, the chairman of Bangladesh’s Cricket Operations Committee told PTI.
Yunus clarified that the Bangladesh Cricket Board had no objections to his planned ‘personal visit,’ as he had obtained prior permission from the team management.
“Obviously there is no room for any personal visit in the middle of a tournament but he took permission from the team management and they duly obliged,” he said.
Fixing technical issue
On Wednesday afternoon, just a day after the Tigers faced a 149-run defeat against South Africa in Mumbai, Shakib Al Hasan made his way back home to be with his childhood coach.
“Even Sachin Tendulkar had his personal mentor and sought help when he needed. The Board did not have any issue with that and it did not disturb the team atmosphere also,” Yunus added.
Following a three-hour training session at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur with his coach Abedeen, the premier all-rounder, Bangladesh skipper, focused on refining his skills. Despite a challenging World Cup, he has contributed with both bat and ball, scoring 56 runs and securing six wickets in four innings.
The Bangladesh team boasts a substantial support staff for the World Cup, including Team Director Khaled Mahmud and Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha. They also benefit from the expertise of Technical Advisor S Sriram, along with Nic Pothas, Rangana Herath, Allan Donald, Shane McDermott, and Faisal Hossain in various capacities.
South African skipper Temba Bavuma also had a brief absence for personal reasons during their World Cup warm-up games. Bangladesh, with two points from five outings, are set to face Pakistan at the Eden Gardens on October 31. Their campaign continues in New Delhi against Sri Lanka on November 6, concluding in Pune with a match against Australia on November 11.”
