Shaheen Afridi plays down Pakistan captaincy snub, vows to continue ‘fighting’

Shaheen Afridi has claimed that he will continue to play for Pakistan with pride while he brushed aside the captaincy snub

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi has opened up on being removed as the side’s T20I skipper after just one series. In their attempt to revamp things ahead of the T20 World Cup, the PCB and selectors decided to replace Shaheen with Babar Azam as the T20I skipper, with the former having captained the side for just one series before the move. Shaheen has claimed that he will continue to play for Pakistan with pride while he brushed aside the captaincy snub.

Shaheen Afridi wants to ‘live in the present’

In an interaction with the media, Shaheen Afridi said that the captaincy being taken away was not under his control and that he wasn’t bothered by it. He further vowed to continue playing more games for Pakistan while adding that he never takes note of the ‘negative’ stories written about him.

For me, Pakistan comes first. Then the team, and then me. I don’t live in the past, I stay in the present,” Shaheen said.

“My intention has always been to fight for the side, and I’ll keep fighting. I don’t look at negative things. For as long as I play, I’ll do it with pride for Pakistan.”

Babar & Afridi’s captaincy shuffles

It all started with a short-lived captaincy stint. After Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy following Pakistan’s disappointing ODI World Cup campaign in India. Shaheen was then given the reins of the T20I team. Unfortunately, his captaincy tenure didn’t go as planned with Pakistan losing a series to New Zealand 4-1.

This led to Babar reclaiming the captaincy, just two months before the T20 World Cup. However, then another debacle occurred as Pakistan failed to qualify for Super Eights for the very first time.
