World Cup 2023: Former Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik has given his two cents on who should lead the Pakistani Cricket Team. Malik, who himself boasts a great captaincy record in ODIs, feels like Shaheen Afridi should be the leader for the Men in Green if Babar Azam decides to step down from the role.

While talking to a local news channel, Malik expressed his views about Babar’s rigid and lackluster plans as a skipper and felt that he is not innovative. Malik also stated that he feels Babar will do even better if the load of captaincy is taken off his shoulders.

“I gave an opinion in the past as well that Babar Azam should leave captaincy. This is my personal opinion. Babar does not think out of the box as a captain. He is doing captaincy but the improvement is not coming. He can do wonders for Pakistan as a player,” the 41-year-old said.

The former Pakistan skipper suggested Shaheen as their new white-ball skipper if Babar stepped down from the role. He claimed that the pacer has already done well in the PSL (Pakistan Super League) by leading Lahore Qalandars to twin titles in 2022 and 2023 as their skipper.

“Shaheen Afridi should become captain in whiteball cricket incase Babar Azam resigns. He has done an attacking captaincy for Lahore Qalandars,” Shoaib Malik concluded.

Does Babar Azam need to step down?

The calls for removing Babar as skipper or him stepping down come after Pakistan was rag-dolled by India on October 14 in the ongoing World Cup 2023.

The baffling thing is that Babar has the best record for any Pakistani skipper in ODI cricket. The right-hander has a win percentage of 64.86, which happens to be the best for any Pakistani skipper (minimum 20 matches).
