Setback for India Women’s Team, fractured finger sidelines Shreyanka Patil from Asia Cup

The BCCI has named left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwer as Patil's replacement.

India Women’s Cricket Team has suffered a setback with star off-spinner Shreyanka Patil being ruled out of the remainder of the Asia Cup due to a fractured finger.

Injury struck during Asia Cup opener

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) confirmed Shreyanka Patil’s absence in a press release on Saturday. She sustained the injury while attempting a catch during India’s opening match against Pakistan on July 18th.

Despite the injury, Patil showed remarkable determination, bowling 3.2 overs and picking up 2 wickets for just 14 runs as Pakistan were bundled out for 108.

Deja Vu for Shreyanka Patil

This is unfortunately not the first time Shreyanka Patil has battled a finger injury this year. Earlier, during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) season, she suffered a hairline fracture in the same hand. This forced her to miss a few matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

However, Shreyanka Patil made a triumphant return in the later stages of the tournament, claiming a crucial four-wicket haul in the final against Delhi Capitals (DC). This stellar performance not only secured victory for RCB but also earned her the prestigious Purple Cap (highest wicket-taker) and the Emerging Player of the Season award.

Tanuja Kanwer replaces Shreyanka Patil

The BCCI has named left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwer as Patil’s replacement. Kanwer had an impressive WPL season herself, leading the wicket-taking charts for Gujarat Giants with 10 scalps in just eight games.

This is a maiden call-up to the Indian team for the 26-year-old, but she was already included in the travelling reserves for the Asia Cup. Kanwer was also selected for the India A squad’s upcoming tour of Australia, starting in early August.

While India comfortably won their opening match against Pakistan by seven wickets, Shreyanka Patil’s absence will undoubtedly be a blow to their bowling attack. The team will hope to continue their winning momentum when they face UAE in their next match on Sunday.
