After a long long wait, Sanju Samson finally smashed his first international century. The knock came in the IND vs SA series decider played in Paarl on December 21 (Thursday). Thanks to his brilliant hundred, Sanju Samson was awarded the player of the match as the Men in Blue completed a thumping series win. To note, this was team India’s second ODI series win in South Africa.
After the match, Samson received the POTM award as he credit the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli among other senior batters for setting up the benchmark high for the youngsters.
Proud of it, especially considering the result as well. Have been working hard, not just for the past couple of months so it’s nice. This format gives you some extra time to understand the wicket and the bowler’s mindset. Batting at the top of the order gives you those 10-20 extra deliveries,” said Sanju Samson.
Juniors are doing the job: Sanju Samson
Samson also lauded his younger teammate Tilak Varma who also played a gritty knock and stroked his maiden ODI fifty. “The whole country is very proud of how Tilak Verma has stepped up, lot more to expect from him. The seniors have set the standards of Indian cricket and the juniors are coming in and doing the job. It’s not very easy, traveling in between and playing every 2-3 days but they’re getting the job done,” added Samson.
Speaking about Samson’s knock, he faced 114 deliveries to score 108 runs which included six fours and three big maximums. The right-handed batter was scalped by Lizaad Williams during the death overs of the first innings.
Speaking about Samson’s overall numbers in the ODI format, the 29-year-old has played 16 games and amassed 510 runs at an excellent average of 56.67. Samson plays at a strike-rate of almost 100 and has hit three fifties and a century (today).
