IPL Auctions are so unpredictable; sometimes teams just end up assembling a squad, where there is enough star power, but then aren’t very effective as a team end of the day. Gujarat Titans look one such team, and Mohammed Siraj, perhaps is the overpaid one there, bagging a contract worth 12.25 Cr. Make no mistake, he is a former World No. 1 bowler in ODIs, but then, there is just something about T20s and him that doesn’t match.
GT Need to Address Pace Issue
Addressing this concern in a bit, GT have a squad that has some big names but, can face a few issues with the pace-bowling departement. South African Gerald Coetzee is out injured, so not sure on his availability. Then comes the option of Kagiso Rabada, Ishant Sharma, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj.
The Hyderabadi has played 93 IPL matches and has picked as many wickets at an average of 30.34, and an economy of 8.64. That is just poor tbh, for a quality bowler like him, who has so much promise. Last year too, he was below average where he picked 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy rate of 9.18. That is just not good enough.
Mohammed Siraj Might Not be 2nd Pacer
And if one is to go by his stats, he might not even make it to the playing XI for GT in IPL 2025. Prasidh had better numbers than him last year, who picked up with 19 wickets in 17 matches at an economy of 8.28, and could be the second pacer after Rabada. He has 117 wickets in 80 matches, and deserves to be the spearhead.
Plus, what might really make the difference is, Ahmedabad, the home ground for GT, might be good for spinners, and might not be as high scoring as some of the other venues like Bengaluru or Hyderabad.. so Shubman Gill might want to play additional spinners, with so many choices present in the squad.
Spin Could be the Way to Go
There is a certain Sai Kishore, whose IPL economy is only 8.32, followed by Washington Sundar, whose career economy is only 7.54. GT also have the option of playing Manav Suthar who was exceptional in the Ranji season, and has a T20 economy of 7.05. Another out-of-the-box option for a spinner could be Glenn Phillips, who has a career economy of 8.42, can bat well and is the best fielder in the world currently.
So, for all these reasons, though debatable, it seems like Mohammed Siraj might just miss out on GT playing XI, at least for a few matches.
GT IPL 2025 Squad: Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Jos Buttler, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Nishant Sindhu, Mahipal Lomror, Kumar Kushagra, Anuj Rawat, Manav Suthar, Washington Sundar, Gerald Coetzee, Arshad Khan, Gurnoor Brar, Sherfane Rutherford, Sai Kishore, Ishant Sharma, Jayant Yadav, Glenn Phillips, Karim Janat, Kulwant Khejroliya.
