Sarfaraz Khan‘s maiden Test hundred was 10 years in the making. Having made his first-class debut a decade back, the unconventional batter had to wait a long time before receiving his maiden India Test call-up earlier in the year. Sarfaraz started things well, hitting three half-centuries in five innings against England but couldn’t get a hundred. He was mighty close in his debut innings but a run out deprived him of the milestone.
Well Played: Rohit-Kohli to Sarfaraz
That dream came true yesterday during the India vs New Zealand first Test. Sarfaraz celebrated the moment to the fullest. After toiling so hard, he deserved it. However, there was another special moment for him. The batter relieved that head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli appreciated him after his 150-run knock.
“It feels so good when a captain & player of Rohit bhai’s stature tells you, ‘well play’. Virat bhai and Gautam sir told me well played as well. It was a proud moment for you, legends of the game, appreciating me,“ said in a BCCI video.
Dream to play alongside Virat Kohli
Sarfaraz also opened up about playing alongside Kohli. The two added 136 runs together for the third wicket and played a major role in India setting a 107-run target. Sarfaraz claimed it was a dream come true to bat alongside Kohli in the Team India jersey and revealed what advice Kohli gave him in the middle.
“I used to watch Virat bhaiya since childhood. It was a dream to play alongside, which came true at RCB. But I didn’t know that I would once share the dressing room and bat alongside him for India. He told me to back myself, play freely, and gave me confidence. It was a dream day,“ Sarfaraz Khan said.
