Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson doesn’t want his ‘rival’ MS Dhoni to retire after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The wicketkeeper batter has been playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since 2008 and with each passing year, speculation over his retirement from the IPL increases.
Samson doesn’t want Dhoni to retire after IPL 2025
Dhoni has confirmed that he’ll play in the IPL 2025 season, but his future after that isn’t certain. If you ask Samson, who thinks of Dhoni as his mentor, he should continue to play in the 2026 edition of the league and beyond. In a recent video where both the wicketkeepers appeared together, Samson was asked about Dhoni potentially retiring after the 18th edition. The RR captain simply said, ‘Thoda aur.’ Suggesting that he wants him to continue for a little while.
“I have to learn from my mentor here. When Mahi bhai comes to play in the IPL, people keep talking, ‘Is he retiring?’ I just keep thinking, ‘Thoda aur abhi’,” Samson said while sitting beside Dhoni.

MS Dhoni’s fitness issues and age
As far as Dhoni’s retirement goes, his will and fitness are the only two things that can put a stop to his IPL career. The former CSK captain has been dealing with a knee issue for the past couple of years. He even underwent surgery in 2023. His wicketkeeper standards have worsened a little bit as well due to this.
Dhoni can still do well with the bat if he has to play a couple of overs. In the last two IPL seasons, the wicketkeeper has faced just 130 balls. It’s up to Thala now. Does Dhoni want to keep pushing himself or leave CSK after IPL 2025?
