Sanju Samson to miss India Champions Trophy squad for ‘this’ reason: Report

Sanju Samson has 3 Centuries and 2 ducks on his last 5 T20I matches

Less than a week remains before the India Squad for the ICC Champions Trophy will be announced. And there are quite a few selection conundrums. The BCCI Selection Committee is determined to feature the best 15-member squad that will travel to Dubai. However, there has been an abundance of wicketkeepers for the India Cricket Team. And in that, Sanju Samson is at the bottom of the pecking order – the reason? Failing to play domestic cricket.

The two top options for the keeper’s role are KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. The former is said to be leading the charts, but a PTI report has claimed that Pant is the leading candidate with Dhruv Jurel as the second-choice keeper. This essentially means KL Rahul will be the Playing XI but won’t don the gloves. So where does Sanju Samson go?

As per the request, the BCCI believes that Samson is the best fit in T20Is. This is mainly owing to the fact that he has 3 T20I tons in his last 5 innings in the shortest format of the game. Also, the main reason for him not getting selected is his refusal to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Sanju Samson is not playing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. He was not selected by the Kerala squad as he was absent from Kerala’s preparatory camp right before the start of the tournament. Samson has been selected in the IND vs ENG T20I series, and as per reports, he will continue to be a part of the team in this particular format.

On the other hand, Dhruv Jurel will be a part of the Champions Trophy squad. Despite getting less game time, the youngster remains in the grand scheme of things. While it only makes sense that a senior like Sanju should be a part of the ICC event, but that apparently is not the case.
