Centurion Sanju Samson credited senior players for setting high standards after his knock helped India seal the ODI series against South Africa 2-1. Riding on the back of Samson’s maiden ODI hundred, India clinched a clinical 78-run victory in the 3rd ODI at Paarl on Thursday. Post the win, the Kerala batter reflected on his knock and how it was shaped.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Samson deemed it as a very special moment and credited the coaches and the senior players for setting high standards and backing players.
“Very emotional moment for me, my family and my coaches. I’m proud of scoring the century and winning the game”, Samson said.
Comebacks over setbacks for Samson
The Kerala batter revealed that the last three months were challenging for him mentally. Noting that his father was a sportsperson too, Sanju asserted that the only way to tackle setbacks were comebacks. He stressed on how this knock was important to him after going through the tough phase.
“I have been blessed in my genes. My father is also a sportsman. How many over setbacks we have, there’s no other way but to come back, bounce back, see how much you can work on yourself and how much you can comeback in a stronger way. Last 3-4 months were really mentally challenging for me. So, going through all that and going there today and doing what I did, I feel happy and grateful“, Samson said.
Speaking about the game, the wicketkeeper-batter revealed that he never looked at the scorecard until he had the partnership with Tilak Varma. He said that he was just focused on the process and spoke about the moment when he accelerated after a couple of maiden overs from Keshav Maharaj.
