Sandwiched between two Test series IND vs AFG T20 series may only be a formality for the BCCI but it could be an important three-match series for someone like Sanju Samson. While he has not been in the T20 side since the Ireland series, he could be back in the squad for the India vs Afghanistan series. And Samson, who is supposed to lead Kerala in the first two Ranji Trophy matches offered a hint.
Despite being named as the captain for the Kerala team, he switched to white-ball practice, wearing an India practice jersey. He also hit a towering six off a spinner during the practice session.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya all missing with injuries, Sanju Samson could expect a recall to the T20 squad even if Rohit Sharma returns to lead. The squad for Afghanistan series, which starts on Jan 11, is likely to be out this week.
Sanju Samson set for crucial next four months
In his return to the ODI side, Sanju Samson hit a brilliant maiden century in India colours in the South Africa series. And even though it could be difficult for Sanju Samson to make it to the T20 World Cup squad, he will give his best.
If selected in the IND vs AFG T20 series, Sanju Samson will be under immense scrutiny. He has to play every knock as if it’s his last. Furthermore, the IPL 2024 will be of utmost importance.
With no bilateral T20I series after IND vs AFG, selectors will keep a close tab on the IPL 2024 performances for T20 World Cup 2024. It will be the selection trial. And if Sanju Samson has a record-breaking IPL 2024, selectors will keep him in the scheme of things for T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
