Sanju Samson gets fitness clearance from BCCI CoE to keep wickets, will captain RR against PBKS

Samson was told by the BCCI CoE that he won't wicket keep for the first three matches of the IPL 2025 season, and after that he'll be assessed again.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has received fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) and will be RR’s designated wicketkeeper and captain against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 5.

BCCI’s restriction on Sanju Samson

Having fractured his right finger, Samson had undergone surgery in February. Since then, he has been under the supervision of the BCCI CoE (formerly the National Cricket Academy). He missed the second leg of the Ranji Trophy for Kerala but recovered completely before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

Or that’s what people expected. The medical staff at CoE weren’t 100% certain that Samson was ready to keep wickets. Therefore, RR made Dhruv Jurel the designated gloveman. Samson also handed the captaincy responsibility to Riyan Riyan and played as an impact substitute player for 3 matches.

RR captain, back to full fitness

After playing against the Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati on March 30, Samson flew to Bengaluru to report to the CoE. After a couple of assessments by the medical staff, the BCCI has given the RR captain fitness clearance. Samson will be back as the captain and wicketkeeper, taking over from where Parag left off.

PBKS is Samson’s next challenge. It isn’t certain right now whether he’s left for Chandigarh, the venue for the match. Given that the game is on April 5, there is ample time for Samson to reach there in time and start his preparations. Considering that RR is placed 9th on the IPL 2025 points table, he’ll take quite a bit on his table and would like to change the tide going forward.
