Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel’s rise is fueled by Rajasthan Royals strategy

The focused training at Rajasthan Royals has evidently empowered Samson and Jurel to perform at a high level for India.

In a time when Indian batters are grappling with challenging conditions both domestically and internationally, Rajasthan Royals’ wicketkeeper-batsmen Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel have stood out. Representing India in different formats and conditions, both players recently demonstrated impressive form, setting them apart from the pack. Samson, the Royals’ captain, scored a stunning 107 off 50 balls in India’s T20I win over South Africa, while Jurel notched two half-centuries — 80 and 68 — during India A’s series against Australia in Melbourne.

Much of their development can be credited to Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) dedicated training philosophy and the focused guidance of High-Performance Director Zubin Bharucha.

Tailored Training programmes by Rajasthan Royals

Both Samson and Jurel spend significant time training at the Rajasthan Royals’ high-performance centre in Talegaon, where they hone their skills under conditions that simulate varied game scenarios. With Bharucha’s expertise, the training includes customised pitch conditions to mirror those in international settings.

“Jurel went straight from the Test series at home, where he didn’t get a game, to Australia. In our preparation, we try and cover high variability,” said Bharucha to TOI. This intensive preparation allowed Jurel to face the generous green cover at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with confidence, an aspect that was challenging for some of his teammates.

Replicating international conditions for consistent performance

RR’s dedication to detail is evident in the training simulations they provide. After the IPL season, the coaching team creates pitches with increased grass cover, up to 12mm, to mirror the challenges of certain international surfaces. This helped Jurel adapt easily to the 8mm grass cover he encountered on the MCG track. “We practise on varied pitches immediately post-IPL,” Bharucha shared, “and then closer to the IPL season, we shift to flatter pitches with less grass to prepare for a range of opposition conditions.”

South Africa Preparations and Sanju Samson

Rajasthan Royals extended similar support to Sanju Samson before his South Africa tour, hosting a two-day training session in Dubai. With the ICC Academy offering pitches with extra bounce, the Royals arranged for both Bharucha and a few bowlers to accompany Samson to Dubai, allowing him to adjust to the bouncier conditions he would face in South Africa.

Bharucha praised the franchise for its commitment to player development, remarking, “RR’s investment in these players — they are investing vast sums in their development — is phenomenal.”

Fostering growth beyond IPL Season ft Rajasthan Royals

RR’s philosophy extends beyond performance in the IPL alone. Bharucha highlighted that player development during off-seasons is equally important. “There’s an inevitable phase that exists for every player between success and failure,” he explained. “Our goal as coaches is to transform that space from fear of failure into a freedom of opportunity by providing an environment based on high variability and meticulous preparation.”

The Rajasthan Royals’ approach builds a foundation of resilience and adaptability for their players, enabling them to transition smoothly between domestic leagues and international tournaments. This forward-thinking mentality aligns with the franchise’s long-term vision of fostering players who can excel in diverse conditions.

Impact on Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel performance

The focused training at Rajasthan Royals has evidently empowered Samson and Jurel to perform at a high level for India. Samson’s explosive knock in South Africa and Jurel’s consistent scoring in Australia are both testaments to RR’s detailed preparation methods. As the IPL approaches, fans will be watching these players closely, anticipating further impact fuelled by their time at the Royals’ high-performance centre.

In conclusion, the Rajasthan Royals’ comprehensive investment in player development has paid dividends, not only for Samson and Jurel but also as a model for player support that could inspire other franchises. With RR’s continued commitment, these players are well-equipped to make their mark in the global arena.
