Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has suggested that Indian batter Shubman Gill needs to improve his defensive technique after he failed to make a big score in the IND vs ENG 4th Test in Ranchi on Saturday.
Gill, who has had a rollercoaster Test series so far, was trapped LBW on 38 off Shoaib Bashir. Manjrekar said that Gill tends to get stuck on the crease and relies too much on hitting boundaries and sixes to score runs.
“I said before, he [Shubman] needs to do a lot of work on his defensive game. You see Yashasvi Jaiswal defending versus Shubman Gill. So he gets a little stuck because of the little subtleties that are missing and he looks to, you know, get runs by hitting boundaries and sixes. He has scored 100 and 90 playing in that manner”, Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo.
Sarfaraz played situation more than actual bowling: Manjrekar
Manjrekar also opined that Sarfaraz Khan restricted himself too much and played the situation.
Notably, Sarfaraz, who made a stunning debut in Rajkot, got dismissed after scoring 14 off 53 balls.
“Sarfaraz Khan, I thought played the situation more than the actual bowling because he is got this natural ability to play spin, but he came in when India was in trouble. The last time in Rajkot, India were 237/4 when he came. And that showed little bit in the way he played”, Manjrekar added.
India reached 219/7 at stumps against England on Day 2 of the fourth Test, trailing the visitors by 134 runs.
