Sania lost in straight sets to American partner Madison Keys in the opening round of the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championships on Tuesday, ending her illustrious 20-year tennis career. Vernokia Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova, a strong Russian duo, defeated Sania and Keys 4-6, 0-6.
Even though she has ended her career, she will now concentrate on a new role as a mentor, this time for a cricket team. For the first Women’s Premier League, Sania was selected as the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s mentor. Sania said that she wants to mentor the upcoming crop of Indian champions after her defeat in Dubai. In addition, she discussed her participation in the WPL.
“It’s easy to get distracted, it’s also easy to tense up and feel the pressure because there is so much expectations on you. I will be able to share my experiences and make them feel comfortable with the transition. It is a huge deal for a lot of players to be playing for teams that have put in so much money in the teams,” she said as quoted by TOI.
