Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia meet Sports Minister Anurag Thakur ahead of WFI elections

Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia meet Sports Minister Anurag Thakur before of the WFI Elections, to ensure Brij Bhushan’s non-involvement.

The much-delayed Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Elections will finally be held on December 21. Ahead of the same, protesting wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia met Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. The wrestlers earlier put a halt to their protests following assurance of proper, clean elections from the Sports Ministry and WFI with no direct or indirect involvement of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the ousted WFI chief.

Speaking to the media after the meeting Anurag Thakur, Sakshi Malik opened up on the interaction.

“This is now government’s time to keep their end of the promise. We have halted our protest since Sports Ministry’s assurance and now its their time. They should make sure, no one related to Brij Bhushan should be a part of this.”

“We are sure that government will make sure WFI will be devoid of people like Brij Bhushan, hence there is nothing to protest about anymore,” Sakshi Malik added.

WFI Elections of December 21:

The Supreme Court has cleared the path for the election of a new governing body for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by overturning a stay issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The attention surrounding this issue intensified when numerous wrestlers, including prominent names like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, levied serious allegations of harassment against the then WFI chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. In a significant display of protest, these wrestlers conducted a sit-in demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Although the election process initially began in July, it faced several legal obstacles, leading to delays. During this period, the global governing body, United World Wrestling, took action by suspending WFI for not conducting elections within the stipulated timeframe. Following a six-month delay, the elections are now scheduled to take place on December 21, with the results expected on the same day.
