Sharjah Cricket Stadium: Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar and his iconic ‘Desert Storm’ innings have now been immortalised at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE. The West Stand at the famous Sharjah cricket stadium was christened the Sachin Tendulkar Stand in a special ceremony on Monday in honour of the 50th birthday of the legendary former India batter.
This renaming of the stand at Sharjah not only falls on Sachin’s birthday, but it also commemorates the historic back-to-back centuries he scored in a sold-out stadium against Australia in 1998.
For the unversed, Sachin scored 143 on April 22 and 134 two days later in the final of Coca-Cola Cup vs mighty Aussies — a triangular series between India, Australia, and New Zealand. Since then, that innings by Master Blaster have been referred to as a true “Desert Storm” by cricket fanatics all over the world.
