Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, along with his family, paid a heartwarming visit to a bat-manufacturing unit in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 17th. This personal trip not only highlighted the renowned cricketer’s connection with the sport, but also served as a significant boost for the region’s famed willow bat industry.

Sachin Tendulkar who was along with his daughter Sara Tendulkar and wife Anjali, displayed genuine interest in the traditional bat-making process. He closely examined the seasoned willow clefts, tested their quality through ‘bat knocking,’ and engaged in discussions with local manufacturers, gaining valuable insights into the industry’s operations.

Beyond cricket, building connections:

The legendary cricketer’s visit transcended the realm of sports. He interacted warmly with locals, posed for selfies, and even enjoyed a taste of the local tea, forging connections and fostering a sense of community.

“Mr. Sachin posing with Kashmir willow has added to our brand value,” exclaimed Nazir Khan, a local manufacturer, reflecting the immense positive impact Tendulkar’s visit has had on the industry’s image. The images of him interacting with artisans and holding bats have already become a landmark moment for the region.

A historical industry on rise:

With roots dating back to the 19th century, Kashmir’s bat industry is a crucial part of the local economy. It currently generates over Rs. 1300 crore annually, supplying bats to major cities across India. An estimated 1.5 million bats are crafted here each year, demonstrating the industry’s significant scale.

Basharat Qayoom, Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama, aptly described Tendulkar’s visit as a “Golden Day for Kashmir Willow Bats.” The legendary cricketer’s presence has undoubtedly brought renewed attention and appreciation to the region’s skilled artisans and their centuries-old craft.

Beyond bats, encouraging young athletes:

While visiting Kashmir, Sachin Tendulkar also extended his support to the upcoming Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg. He encouraged young athletes participating in the event, urging them to “enjoy sports, be themselves, and play fiercely” – a message that resonated with aspiring sportspersons across the region.
