“I am a cricket fan at heart and I can’t wait to be behind the mic to watch the brilliant performances from the world’s best cricketers during the SA20. I am looking forward to joining some of my past team mates and cricketing legends for this exciting opportunity,” De Villiers said.
To note, De Villiers announced his retirement from international cricket in November 2021. ABD played his last international match in April 2018 — a Test against Australia in Johannesburg. His last ODI game for South Africa was against India at Centurion on February 16, 2018, while he last turned up for his country in the shortest format on October 29, 2017.
Often referred to as “Mr 360” for his wide range of shots which found all corners of the boundary, de Villiers played 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20 internationals for South Africa, scoring more than 20,000 runs across the three formats.
Coming back to the commentary, the SA20 organizers have reunited the legendary Proteas slip cordon with De Villiers joined by his former national team teammates Mark Boucher, Ashwell Prince, Shaun Pollock, Herschelle Gibbs, Chris Morris and Vernon Philander. The familiar silky-smooth voice of the experienced Mark Nicholas will hold it all together with former England internationals Kevin Pietersen and Darren Gough also joining the team.

Apart from the local stars, several other former International cricketers including Zainab Abbas, Urooj Mumtaz, Pommie Mbangwa, Mike Haysman, Kevin Pietersen and former West Indies T20 World Cup-winning captain Daren Sammy will also be in the commentary panel.
I’m excited to be part of the SuperSport team for the SA20 league. Especially as Someone who was born in KZN and also someone who has played cricket in Durban in my early part of my career. I’m very proud to be part of the inaugural SA20 league and love the country. I am really looking forward to contributing towards this event with a special team,” said Pietersen.
