SA vs ENG ODI: SouthAfrica vs England LIVE – Back against the wall, SouthAfrica will take on England in a 3-match ODI series starting Friday. SA have just 5 ODIs left before the ICC World Cup 2023 to qualify. To accommodate the three-match series, CSA has paused their ambitious SA20 League for 10 days. However, with England in supreme form, Temba Bavuma & Co are in a tough spot. Placed 11th in the ICC ODI Super League Standings, Proteas need to win 3-0 against England to avoid travelling to Zimbabwe for qualification for this year’s World Cup. Proteas are languishing behind in the World Cup Super League standings. They are chasing an automatic qualifying berth for the tournament in India along with Ireland, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

They sit in 11th place in the standings, having forfeited three ODIs against Australia this month to make room for SA20. However, all hopes are not lost for Proteas. They qualify directly if they beat England 3-0 and then win their last two qualifying ODIs against the Netherlands.

Any slip-up opens the door for one of the other chasing teams to qualify. It could force SouthAfrica into the ignominy of having to play in a pre-qualifying tournament in mid-year.

Who have sealed WC spots?

  • India (Hosts)
  • NewZealand
  • Pakistan
  • England
  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • Afghanistan

ICC ODI Super League qualifying Scenarios:

  • The Super League is main qualification pathway for the tournament.
  • The top seven sides, along with hosts India will gain direct entry into the tournament.
  • The other two spots will be decided from the play-off tournament in Zimbabwe in mid-year.
  • The WestIndies are 8th in the standings but have completed their Super League programme.
  • SriLanka must win two of three ODIs in NewZealand in March to overtake them.
  • Ireland must win all three of their May series against Bangladesh if they are to stand any chance of a top-eight finish.
  • If both Ireland and SriLanka do not win all their remaining three games, then the task will be easier for SA.
  • SA will still need to win a minimum of three ODIs out of five to ensure automatic qualification.

South Africa go into the series against England with a new coaching line-up. Mark Boucher quit following November’s T20 World Cup diaster. Shukri Conrad, who was named as South Africa’s test coach earlier this month, will take charge of the ODI squad against England. New white-ball coach, Rob Walter will join after finishing his commitments with the Central Stags in NewZealand.

SouthAfrica Squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Rassie van der Dussen, Keshav Maharaj, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi.

England Squad: Jos Buttler (Captain), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes
