After a 7-wicket loss in the 1st ODI, India needed to win the 2nd match at Boland Park in Paarl to stay alive in the series. But it did not work out. KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first and gave India a good start with Shikhar Dhawan, bringing up 64-run opening stand. Thanks to KL Rahul’s 51, Rishabh Pant’s career-best (ODI) 85 and Shardul Thakur’s 40, India set a competitive 288-run target.

But Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan took the match away. De Kock used his IPL experience to go hammer and tongs against Indian spinners from the word go while picked up Bhuvneshwar Kumar on his off day. The opening duo put up a 132-run stand to put South Africa on the driver’s seat.
While Shardul Thakur removed QDK, the assault didn’t stop there. Temba Bavuma and Malan added 80 runs for the 2nd wicket and then Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen added another half-century stand to blow India away by 7 wickets.
Amongst Indian bowlers, only Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal looked threatening as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur went over a run per ball.
