Ruturaj Gaikwad vs Rohit Sharma? CSK skipper likely to lead India ‘A’ in practice game before BGT

Team India is expected to leave for Australia two weeks before the first Test on November 22 in Perth.

Are we going to see Ruturaj Gaikwad take on against Rohit Sharma’s Indian team? Well, it is highly likely as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper is touted to lead India ‘A’ ahead of the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) later this year. As India gears up for the crucial Test series against Australia, the Indian selectors are contemplating a unique warm-up strategy. For the first time in recent memory, the Indian team will play an internal practice match against the touring India ‘A’ side ahead of the Test series.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead ‘India A’?

As per Cricbuzz, Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to lead the Indian ‘A’ team in Australia. The ‘A’ side will be reaching the Australian shores before the senior team and will play two first-class matches. The opening four-day match between them will be played in Mackay (October 31-November 3). Meanwhile, the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the second clash, from November 7-10.

While the India ‘A’ squad is yet to be announced, there are strong indications that the captaincy reins could be handed to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Chennai Super Kings skipper has been in exceptional form across formats, and his leadership qualities have been evident in the IPL. With a potential mix of Test regulars in the India ‘A’ squad, Gaikwad’s appointment is also an indication that India might see him as a possible backup opener to Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

While the Indian selectors have yet to reveal the India ‘A’ squad, it is expected to be announced in the coming week. Meanwhile, Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, has scheduled a media conference for Monday, October 14, where he is likely to announce the Australia ‘A’ squad and provide updates on Cameron Green’s availability for the Test series.
