Ruturaj Gaikwad credits MS Dhoni for Shivam Dube’s transformation, but all-rounder reveals his own secret sauce

While there may be some discrepancy about who deserves the most credit for Dube's transformation, one thing is clear: both MS Dhoni's guidance and Dube's own hard work have played significant roles.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are off to a flying start in IPL 2024, and a key factor in their success has been the resurgence of Shivam Dube. Dube has overcome his Achilles’ heel – the short ball – and is now a force to be reckoned with.

Shivam Dube’s destructive power

Shivam Dube‘s power hitting has been on full display. He smashed five sixes in a blistering 23-ball 51 against the Gujarat Titans, following up on his unbeaten 34 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

However, the most significant improvement is his newfound ability to handle short deliveries.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hails MS Dhoni influence

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad attributes Shivam Dube’s transformation to MS Dhoni personal mentorship.

“Just confidence. When he came here, the management worked with him personally. Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) worked with him personally,” Ruturaj in the post-match presentation said.

Ruturaj Gaikwad believes this close guidance has boosted Shivam Dube’s confidence and helped him understand his role within the team’s strategy.

Shivam Dube reveals own initiative

While Ruturaj Gaikwad credits the CSK management, Shivam Dube himself offers a slightly different perspective. He acknowledges the team’s support but emphasizes his own independent efforts:

“This franchise (CSK) is something different… They are giving me the freedom… I have worked hard to remain prepared for the short balls.”

Shivam Dube highlights the freedom he’s received from the CSK leadership, allowing him to focus on tackling the short ball challenge, especially with the new rule permitting two bouncers per over.

Taking Ownership ft Shivam Dube

Shivam Dube reveals the key to his success: taking ownership of his weakness. He’s actively worked on facing short deliveries during his personal time, demonstrating his commitment to improvement.

This dedication has paid off. Dube is now playing with greater confidence and has even started attacking the short ball, albeit with occasional mixed results. He’s no longer a liability against short deliveries and remains dangerous against spin bowling, making him a well-rounded threat.

Shared Credit for Success

While there may be some discrepancy about who deserves the most credit for Dube’s transformation, one thing is clear: both MS Dhoni’s guidance and Dube’s own hard work have played significant roles. This combination has resulted in a revitalized Shivam Dube, who is proving to be a valuable asset for the Chennai Super Kings.
