Ruturaj Gaikwad aware of huge expectations in number 3 role, wary about comparison with Virat Kohli

It is fair to say Gaikwad is taking to the number 3 role quite seamlessly, playing a blistering innings of 77 runs in the IND vs ZIM 2nd T20I.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has seen himself grow from strength to strength since making his debut for India. He has had successes in national colours, with franchise cricket also showing faith in his abilities. Gaikwad was chosen to lead Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024 as MS Dhoni’s successor. He did pretty well in filling Dhoni’s shoes. However, Gaikwad has been presented with a new challenge of filling Virat Kohli’s shoes.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, a man of responsibilities

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has assumed various roles in his playing career, is being placed at number 3 in the Indian team currently, a position Virat Kohli has played in though out his career. Gaikwad is aware of the pressure and said it was difficult to fill Virat Kohli’s shoes ahead of the IND vs ZIM 3rd T20I.

Tough to fill in Virat Kohli’s shoes?

It’s a really big topic, it’s not the right point to think about it,” he said on filling the No.3 slot. “To compare to him or to fill in his shoes is really tough. As I had said in the IPL as well, its difficult to fill Mahi bhai’s shoes as well. You want to start your own career, you want to play your own game. That’s the priority right now, focus on one game, focus on making your team win – for whichever side you play – and make sure you’re on the winning side more often than not,” Gaikwad said.

After playing a blistering innings of 77 runs in the 2nd T20I which helped India draw level in the 5-match series, Ruturaj must be feeling more confident about playing in the number 3 position. Another good innings or two might help Ruturaj get over the pressure of filling Virat Kohli’s shoes.
