Sunil Gavaskar: While a lot of cricket experts and fans celebrated Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scoring runs in the recently concluded Test series against West Indies, Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the duo’s significance in scoring runs against the Windies. The former India cricketer has called for a change in approach and wants the selectors to think about the future rather than persisting with Rohit Sharma and Kohli.
Earlier, Gavaskar had questioned the selection of Kohli, Rohit, and Ajinkya Rahane and wondered if young players will be backed under the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel.
“The runs scored by Rohit and Kohli against this West Indies attack begs the question what did the selectors learn that they didn’t know already,” he wrote in his column for Mid-Day.
“Wouldn’t it have been better to try out some youngsters and see how they take to Test cricket, or is it that the selectors don’t want any sort of challenge from the younger lot to the established players,” he added?

Sunil Gavaskar: Gavaskar wants the Agarkar-led panel to make bold decisions, wants young players to be given a fair run
Rohit Sharma scored 240 and was the second-highest run-scorer, while Kohli scored 197 runs. However, Gavaskar believes the Agarkar-led selection panel needs to think about the future. While India have selected a young squad for the five-match T20 series against West Indies, the legendary cricketer states if India needs to break the ICC trophy drought then they should think about the future.
“Now that Ajit Agarkar has come on board as the Chairman of the selection committee let’s see if there is going to be any change in the approach to building a team for the future or if it’s going to be the same old story of the Indian team being the bridesmaid but not the bride,” he further added.
For the uninitiated, Agarkar is in West Indies to discuss the T20 future with Kohli and Rohit. While the duo will play ODI World Cup 2023, their status in the T20 format remains uncertain. Speaking about Test cricket, India have a five-month break before embarking on the South Africa tour.
