78-year-old former German and Bayern Munich star Franz Beckenbauer passed away on Monday, leaving the sport bereft of one of its most iconic figures. The world of football has mourned the loss of ‘Der Kaiser’, with FC Bayern’s supervisory board member Karl Heinz Rummenigge recommending that the Bavarian giants should host a memorial service for Beckenbauer at the Allianz Arena.

Beckenbauer’s impact on the game was immeasurable. He led West Germany to the World Cup title in 1974 and then led the national team to win the 1990 World Cup title in Italy. He revolutionised the role of the defender by introducing an attacking threat that was ahead of his time. In his personal life, he bring the to 2006 World Cup Germany, though his involvement was later tarnished by accusations of corruption, which he denied.
Rummenigge was a close friend of Beckenbauer, with the duo sharing the dressing room for the Bavarian Giants in the 1970s.
“The entire football world and beyond is mourning the loss of our friend Franz. FC Bayern should organize a memorial service for him in the stadium, which would never have existed without him,” Rummenigge told German news outlet Bild.
According to the same outlet, Rummenigge has already had a word with Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness about the matter.
