Rs 1.5 crore/minute! Franchises spend 28% of total purse on marquee players at IPL 2025 auction

Teams had Rs 641.50 crore left in their purses before the auction. After just 12 players going under the hammer, that number is Rs 461 crore.

Blockbuster! The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction has provided enough thrill in just two hours that most tournaments don’t. The bidding wars happening in Jeddah have seen a whopping Rs 180.50 crore spent in just 120 minutes. The ten IPL franchises have spent the money on just 12 players.

Franchises spill big bucks on marquee players

The two sets of marquee players, six each, have seen 28% of the total purse spent on them. For some context, that means that Rs 1.5 crore per minute or Rs 2.5 lakh were spent per second during the first round of bidding.

The biggest contributors to the money spent were Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, who took Rs 53.75 crore home between themselves. That is 33% of the Rs 180.50 crore have been spent on them, and nearly 10% of the total purse was spent on Pant and Shreyas.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh are the other two big contributors. Both the bowlers joined the Punjab Kings, who had Rs 36 crore, 18 each. Both accounted for Rs 20% of the money spent on the marquee players. Punjab were the biggest contributor to the spending. They combined paid Rs 62.75 crore, which was more than 33% of the total amount.
