RR’s Dhruv Jurel has tall task at hand to justify 6900% salary hike, numbers in T20s don’t look bright

Dhruv Jurel was retained by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 6900 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction. But is he worth the price?

There is no doubt that Dhruv Jurel is a promising batter who is very much capable of scoring runs. He was retained by Rajasthan Royals for a whooping Rs 14 crore ahead of the mega auction. But what is worrying is his numbers in the shortest format of the game and in the IPL as well. In IPL 2025, Jurel will have a tall task at hand to justify his hefty price tag. And it won’t be a cakewalk for him, simply because of the star-studded line-up that RR has.

Can Jurel justify Rs 14 cr price tag?

Jurel will have a lot of pressure on him in the upcoming season, especially after his salary jumped from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 14 crore. The hike is a staggering 6900%. With more money comes more responsibilities but in this case, the batter doesn’t seem to have it in him to do exceedingly well in the shortest format of the game.

He has played two full seasons so far in the IPL. In 2023, he played 13 matches and amassed 152 runs, averaging 21.71. The next year, he managed to score 195 runs from 15 matches, averaging 24.37. He has only two half-centuries in IPL, with a highest score of 56 not out.

It is pertinent to point out that Jurel is unlikely to get much time in the middle to prove his worth. The likes of Jaiswal, Samson, Parag – who will bat above Jurel – will eat up most of the game time. Hence, Jurel is already tasked with performing exceptionally well in the limited opportunities he would get.

Poor numbers in T20s for Jurel

Additionally, the keeper-batter hasn’t played a lot of cricket recently. He performed miserably in his debut T20I series against England, managing to score just 4 and 2 runs in two matches. Prior to that series, he warmed the bench mostly in Australia where he was included in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Talking about his numbers in T20s, Jurel has 451 runs from 42 matches, and averages just 19.60.
