After the announcement of the India squad for the T20I series against England, we have another major development coming up. Well, according to reports, Rohit Sharma was inches away from announcing his retirement from Test cricket. After missing the opening game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Rohit came back for the second Test in Adelaide but had horrible outings. After the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, he dropped himself and was thinking to hang up his boots. However, his “well-wishers” close to Rohit changed his mind.
Gautam Gambhir wanted Rohit Sharma to retire?
According to the Times of India, the relationship between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir hasn’t gelled well so far. From on-field strategies to team combinations, there were disagreements. “Rohit had made up his mind after MCG. Had his well wishers from the outside didn’t force him to change his mind, we could have well seen another retirement in Australia,” said a source aware of developments told the Times of India.
Rohit was facing flak for failing consistently with the bat, both in the top-order and the middle-order. In five innings, he only managed to score 31 runs in IND vs AUS BGT Test series, which ended with the Indian skipper dropping himself out of the playing XI for the 5th Test. It didn’t affect massively as well, with Australia clinching the fifth Test in Sydney to win back the BGT trophy after a decade. Apart from this, Rohit’s leadership was questioned as well, with him facing six defeats in as many Tests lately.

What’s next for Rohit Sharma & Gautam Gambhir?
The camaraderie between former head coach Rahul Dravid, who also celebrates his birthday today, and skipper Rohit Sharma was there to be seen. However, ever since Gambhir has taken the reigns as the head coach, Team India’s ship has been twisting. India not only suffered their maiden Test series loss at home after 12 years but lost the BGT after a decade. Rohit and Virat Kohli’s form were obviously major concerns Down Under.
