Undoubtedly, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are two of the greatest ever to represent the Indian cricket team. They have won numerous matches for Team India across formats. Combined, they have an ODI World Cup, a Champions Trophy, and two T20 World Cups to their name.
But, for how long can someone be lauded for their past success and continue to give leeway for their current performance? In 2024, Kohli averaged just 21.83 across formats, while the Indian captain did a little better with 31.18 runs per dismissal. This is why their future is no longer in their own hands.

Retirement in Rohit Sharma & Kohli’s hand, future not
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that for all the batting superstars have done, they can’t decide their future. Retirement might be a personal decision, but to get selected for the series or tournament is not in the hands of the selectors.
“Rohit, an outstanding player of this generation, a great. Virat Kohli, a great player of this generation. But a player does not decide their future; their form and selectors decide the future. People start talking wrong about you when you don’t score runs, but you can prove them wrong by scoring runs; that is the only way I look at it. If they want to play on, they will have to make a comeback and score big runs,” Harbhajan told Sports Tak.
“It is entirely up to the players to think that they are fit enough to play. They are entitled to think like that. I am not only talking about Rohit and Virat particularly; it’s your thought process which makes you want to play and play good. But, when it comes to the point of selection, only the selectors can decide,” Harbhajan added.
