Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli bow down to Gautam Gambhir’s playing all-format demand

Gambhir's appointment as head coach is bringing a shift in Indian cricket's approach, with an emphasis on playing across all formats and active participation in domestic cricket.

In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced squads for the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka with an important statement regarding player participation in domestic competitions. The BCCI’s release emphasised monitoring player availability for the upcoming domestic season, suggesting that international stars might now be seen competing in domestic matches. This directive is believed to have been strongly influenced by Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach.

Another crucial aspect of Thursday’s announcement was inclusion of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Team India ODI squad which also goes along the philosophy of Gautam Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir’s influence on domestic cricket

While the BCCI has always encouraged international players to participate in domestic cricket, the appointment of Gambhir has intensified this approach. The BCCI and selectors will closely monitor players during international breaks and domestic matches. With the domestic season beginning on September 5 with the Duleep Trophy, the participation of some international players is expected.

“I’m a very strong believer in one thing, that if you’re good, you should be playing all the three formats,” Gambhir remarked recently. “Injuries are part of a sportsman’s life. And if you’re playing all the three formats, you get injured, you go back, get recovered, but you should be playing all the three formats.”

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli align with Gambhir’s Vision

The decision of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play the ODIs in Sri Lanka aligns with Gambhir’s principles. The new head coach insists on full participation from all players in international competitions.

Both Sharma and Kohli were approached by BCCI officials and agreed to Gambhir’s strategy. With only six ODIs left before the Champions Trophy—three against Sri Lanka next month and three against England next year—their involvement was deemed crucial.

It is notable that the star duo along with Jasprit Bumrah were poised for a break during India Tour of Sri Lanka but alas it was not meant to be.

Gambhir vs Kohli no more!

Interestingly, Virat Kohli’s willingness to work with Gautam Gambhir marks a significant development. Despite their history of confrontations during IPL matches, Kohli has conveyed his readiness to maintain a professional relationship with Gambhir.

Following discussions after the World Cup final in Barbados, Kohli assured BCCI officials that past issues would not affect their collaboration, recognising their mutual goal of advancing Indian cricket.

Rest for Jasprit Bumrah

While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to play, Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, will be rested. This decision was made to manage his workload and ensure he remains fit for future assignments.

Gambhir’s appointment as head coach is bringing a shift in Indian cricket’s approach, with an emphasis on playing across all formats and active participation in domestic cricket. As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli embrace this philosophy, it sets a precedent for the team, signalling a new era under Gambhir’s leadership.
