India cricket team spinner Varun Chakravarthy heaped praise on captain Rohit Sharma for his strategy in the Champions Trophy. The Tamil Nadu spinner played a crucial role in the Men in Blue’s campaign, finishing as the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Varun was added to the Indian squad in the last minute and the gamble paid off instantly.
Varun heaps praise on Rohit
Speaking to Star Sports, Chakravarthy revealed how Rohit had maximised on the spinner’s potential during CT 2025.
“Rohit Sharma used me very well. I bowled 2 overs in Powerplay, 2 to 3 overs in death and bowled whenever a wicket was needed in Middle overs. I told this is how my potential can be maximized and he understood that without me saying it because he is one of the greatest captains of all time,” Varun said.

In his very first CT 2025 game, he bagged a five-wicket haul against New Zealand. He was instrumental in the semi-final against Australia and in the final against New Zealand. In the ultimate clash, he finished with figures of 2/45, getting the important wickets of Will Young and Glenn Phillips.
When Rohit Sharma needed wickets in the final, he turned to the mystery spinner. However, as the first innings progressed, Chakravarthy looked hampered. He was seen limping around and even lying down on the field as he experienced pain.
But Chakravarthy powered through. He ended his spell in the 45th over of the match, and only then did he leave the field. For the last five overs, Washington Sundar took his place. After the first innings of the India vs. New Zealand final concluded, the spinner revealed the issue he was facing.
