Rohit Sharma has not yet given up on his future in T20Is for the Indian Cricket Team. Now in the latter years of his career, Rohit has not played a T20I since the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday hinted that he is looking forward to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be jointly hosted by West Indies and the USA next year. Rohit has not played a T20I international for India ever since Men in Blue’s ten-wicket loss to England in the semifinal of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia on November 10 last year. Under Hardik Pandya and Rahul Dravid, India has taken a new approach with several young IPL stars featuring in the shortest format.

“More than just going and enjoying, there is another reason to come here (in the USA). Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, there will be the T20 World Cup (2024) happening in this part of the world. So, I am pretty sure everyone is excited. So yaa, we look forward to that,” Rohit Sharma said in a video.

Rohit Sharma phased out?

Rohit is among the seniors who were phased out after the T20 World Cup debacle. Since the tournament, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik and Mohammed Shami are yet to play. Bhuvneshwar Kumar played in New Zealand after the T20 WC but has been absent from action since.

Rohit Sharma is the designated captain in ODIs and T20Is and has had his struggles with injuries. Now beyond his peak years, the Indian Cricket Team have opted for a cautious approach. Rohit has only featured in vital series and has only played a handful of ODIs in the last 12 months.

“At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it’s a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it’s not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided on just look at some players’ workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that (category) as well,” Rohit had told reporters in a press conference.

Rohit’s comeback into T20Is will not be straightforward. Shubman Gill has sealed his spot at the top of the order, while Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prithvi Shaw are among options. Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson have also opened the batting in the past.
