Rohit Sharma & Shreyas Iyer skipping Ranji Trophy to attend practice camp for India vs England ODIs

Four of Mumbai's top players won't play in the last round of the Ranji Trophy.

Mumbai will enter their must-win Ranji Trophy match against Meghalaya without Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The star cricketers have reportedly pulled out of the last round of the Ranji Trophy. Shreyas Iyer featured in nearly all of Mumbai’s matches in the 2024-25 season, but Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal only joined after the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) mandate regarding participation in domestic cricket.

One would think that both only played to show BCCI that they still value domestic cricket, and that’s why after playing one game, they have pulled out. In comparison, Ravindra Jadeja is expected to feature in the second game as well, and like them, he was in Australia for 2 months as well. So why have they pulled out?

Rohit Sharma & Shreyas Iyer skipping Ranji Trophy for ODI training camp

The reason is the India vs. England ODI series. The 50-over matches kick off on February 6, just four days after the last round of the Ranji Trophy ends. This means that players in the squad for the England series wouldn’t have much time to rest or adjust to ODI cricket. Mind you, Team India hasn’t played a one-day match in nearly 6 months.

The BCCI is therefore planning to have a short practice camp in Nagpur. They have told players to report on February 2. “Rohit, Jaiswal, and Iyer are all likely to attend the BCCI’s Naman Annual Awards in Mumbai on February 1. The next day (February 2), they are supposed to report for a short camp in Nagpur before the three-match ODI series against England,” a BCCI source told the Times of India.

Given that the Ranji Trophy would still be on, it’s impossible to get to Nagpur, the venue of the first ODI, would be impossible. Those like Virat Kohli or KL Rahul won’t be there on February 2 as they will be playing for their respective states. But others like Rishabh Pant and the three Mumbai stars are expected to be there.
