Rohit Sharma not BAD captain after losing WTC Final, claims Aussie legend

Michael Clarke feels Rohit Sharma should remain the captain till at least 50-Over World Cup.

Rohit Sharma: Legendary cricketer Michael Clarke has advised everyone to have faith in India skipper Rohit Sharma after their 209-run thrashing against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. With voices growing for change in India leadership, Clarke feels Rohit is the best person to lead the team and lavished praise for the way he led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles.

The former Australia captain also feels Rohit should continue to lead India as the 50-over World Cup is just around the corner. “I would be keeping faith with Rohit. I think he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach he looks to be as positive as he can be. He has had a lot of success as a leader. Look at his IPL record for MI. Just because India didn’t win the Test Championship doesn’t mean Rohit is not the right guy to lead India.

The fact that India qualified again, they are the only team to make consecutive finals, says a lot about how they have played their Test cricket over the past years. It is also a very important time for stability with the one-day World Cup right around the corner,” Clarke told RevSportz.

Rohit Sharma: Rohit has done a commendable job as captain – Michael Clarke on India skipper’s form

In the past two years, the India skipper’s form has dipped a bit in Test cricket. Rohit scored 906 runs in 2021 and could manage to score only 90 runs in three Tests in 2022. Injuries played a part in Rohit not being able to play more Tests in 2022. In the WTC final also Rohit Sharma managed 43, but that big score has eluded him.

However, Clarke feels India’s skipper’s timely hundred in Border Gavaskar Trophy is a good reminder of Rohit’s value as a solid top-order batter, and one or two bad knocks should not be judged severely.

“He has done well as a batter as well. Think of the hundred in the last series. Losing a one-off final doesn’t make him a bad captain and nor does it make India a bad team.

To make consecutive finals isn’t easy. What it means is that India was the only team to play consistently well over a period of four years. To do so in Test cricket is commendable, and I would urge you to look at that as well before making any kind of judgment call,” Clarke concluded.
