Rohit Sharma itching to turn up for MI again in ‘new role’ after losing captaincy

Mumbai Indians begin their IPL 2024 campaign against Gujarat Titans in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

All eyes will be on Rohit Sharma. Wasn’t it the case one might ask. Well, he was always under the spotlight. But after 11 years, he will turn up for Mumbai Indians as a ‘player’ and not as a captain. The India captain is not good enough to continue as MI captain while Hardik Pandya is not good enough to lead India. In this strange setup, Rohit will turn up as a player but he needs to prove that he has still got that mojo. Hence, in the GT vs MI IPL 2024 clash, even though MI coach Mark Boucher claimed Rohit will be free of pressure, it will be him to take the spotlight again. But as a player he is, Rohit Sharma is ready.

“For me preparation has always been the key that gives me confidence ahead of any game. Yeah, there are a lot of things I do before a game and I think I have done almost everything. And I will be ready for the game,” Rohit Sharma said ahead of GT vs MI clash.

New role, old Rohit Sharma?

This marks a significant moment for Rohit Sharma, as it will be the first time since the 2013 season that he will play under another player’s captaincy for Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai outfit had earlier declared Hardik Pandya as the new captain of the franchise. It signifies a new chapter in Sharma’s IPL journey, and he will be eager to kick it off with a strong performance.

Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Sharma still carries the responsibility of setting the tone for his team’s campaign. Ahead of the exciting clash, Sharma has shared insights into his preparations.

“A lot of the young players that we have got in the auction have done well in domestic and international cricket. I am looking forward to that and hope they will make a mark from the beginning itself,” Rohit Sharma added.

MI’s Poster boy

Rohit Sharma is now two matches away from being the first cricketer to play 200 IPL games for MI. Rohit Sharma has been with the Mumbai-based franchise since 2011 and has blossomed into its poster boy, propelling them to new heights. Besides guiding MI to five trophies during his 10-year captaincy stint, the experienced opener has also amassed 5041 runs, including one century.
