Rohit Sharma injured himself in the second over after he dived low to take a catch in the slips. Not only did he fail to grab hold of the ball, but was taken off the field. Rohit did not take the field with vice-captain KL Rahul leading the side. He visited a hospital and his finger was heavily bandaged while in the dressing room.

The 35-year-old opted against batting, until absolutely necessary walking in at No.9 on Wednesday. He looked troubled and used less of his bottom hand which was strapped. Rohit managed a 27-ball half-century, taking India agonisingly close to a series-levelling win.

After the game, Rohit Sharma revealed that he had dislocated his thumb and needed stitches. However, he did confirm that the injury did not look great. “It (thumb injury) isn’t too great. Some dislocation and some stitches. Fortunately, not a fracture and so, I was able to bat,” Rohit said.
