Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s batting form is a cause for concern. Now, with the results going in the opposite direction, both the pressure and the heat have turned on the Indian captain. The Mumbaikar wasted yet another start in the 1st ODI in Mirpur. The dismissal has forced the critics to question whether captaincy has started to take its toll on Rohit Sharma, the batter. The drop in batting averages points out that all is not well with Rohit, the batsman. Follow Indian Cricket LIVE Updates & IND vs BAN LIVE Updates with InsideSport.IN

After weathering the early storm and scoring 27 runs in 31 balls, Rohit’s stumps were castled by Bangladesh spinner Shakib Al Hasan. This is unlike Rohit, who would not have let the start go to waste in his heyday. In fact, he would have gone on and scored a big one and lived up to the reputation he carries, especially in the 50-over format.

Lately, the numbers are dwindling and the averages are dropping. Let’s consider this year. Below are Rohit’s numbers across formats for 2022.

Insidesport

If one leaves out the Test format, which Rohit has missed due to fitness issues, his numbers in both ODIs and T20Is haven’t been up to the mark. An average of 33 in ODIs, a format that once used to be his go-to format to get back in form, is not helping him at the moment.

Even in T20Is, he is showing signs of wear and tear. Rohit averages a shade over 24 in 2022 after having played 29 matches in that year. Though his strike rate is above 134, more often than not, he has been unable to post big totals on the board.

Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record: Are Rohit’s powers on the wane?

Let’s take this analysis a little further. We will breakdown Rohit Sharma’s batting form across the three formats, as a skipper, and during the time he played only as a pure batsman. First up is Test cricket.

Being a late bloomer in red-ball cricket, Rohit hasn’t been able to play as many Test matches as he would have liked to, but nonetheless, he has been a match-winner, to say the least.

Insidesport

Rohit has played in 45 Tests for India, out of which he has captained the side in only two Tests. He became a full-time Test captain this year after Virat Kohli relinquished the top spot. His numbers as a batter in test matches are pretty good. However, it might be too early to judge his numbers in Test cricket as a skipper.

Moving forward, Rohit’s fitness would be a major indicator as to how long he can serve as a regular Test skipper.

The struggle is evident in ODIs and T20Is

Let’s take ODIs in equation first. Rohit Sharma has enjoyed a major part of his success in 50-over cricket. The right-handed batter has three double hundreds in the formats, more than anyone else by some distance. Due to this, he was elevated as India’s stand-in captain whenever regular skipper Virat Kohli decided to take a break.

However, the selectors decided to give the reins of the white-ball format to Hitman last year. This was largely due to his stupendous record as a skipper and as a batter. The numbers also prove the point.

Insidesport

An average of 57 as a batter from 17 matches as skipper is an outstanding achievement. This overhauls his career batting average, which lies above 48 in 234 matches. However, the statistics do not always reflect the full story.

In 2022, Rohit has missed most of the matches due to injury, or due to rest. With only seven matches this season, Rohit is yet to make an impact in ODIs in 2022. He has two half-centuries from seven games, with 76 as his top score. Just for the record, Rohit’s average has fallen below 40 in a calendar year for the first time since 2018.

Insidesport

Last but not least, there are the T20Is. It is highly possible that Rohit Sharma might have played his last T20I for India. Under his captaincy, India lost the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Rohit’s struggle was evident in the T20Is, especially in the semifinal, where he scored 27 runs in 28 balls. That’s not what you expect from one of the leading batsmen in white-ball cricket.

His overall record, both as a captain and as a batter, is incredible. Rohit has scored 100s both as a batter and as a captain in the shortest format. He is the only cricketer to achieve the feat. He is the leading run scorer in the format, but his contribution in 2022 hasn’t yielded the desired results for the team.

Rohit’s form in 2022 has been patchy. At times he has looked good, but has thrown his wicket away. On other occasions, the bowlers have gotten the better of him. Going into the 2023 World Cup, India will need an in-form Rohit Sharma to become world champions again.

The cracks are evident in Rohit Sharma’s batting of late. He is making mistakes, and bowlers are dismissing him cheaply. It remains to be seen how Rohit tackles the problem and returns to form to make things easy for the middle-schoolers. His first task would be to come good in the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh and keep the series alive.

He has done it in the past, and there is no reason why Rohit Sharma cannot overcome this challenge in the last phase of his career.
