Rohit Sharma and Virat have stitched some crucial partnerships on the pitch for years, but have not been on the same page on all times. One of the biggest sagas in recent cricket memory saw rumours suggesting a rift between the captain and the vice-captain. The incident happened after the 2019 World Cup campaign, where Kohli led the side.
Writing in his book, R Sridhar said, “After the 2019 World Cup, there was a lot of bad press about what allegedly happened in the dressing room during our campaign and following our loss to New Zealand in the semifinal. We were informed that there was a Rohit camp and a Virat camp, that someone had unfollowed another on social media – stuff that could be unsettling if you allowed it to fester.”

There was great discord in the dressing room as India prepared for life ahead. With no MS Dhoni around in the dressing room, there was a real danger of public controversy. However, before the West Indies series, former coach Ravi Shastri found the opportunity to nip it in the bud.
Sridhar mentioned, “We landed in the United States (US) some 10 days after the World Cup for a T20 series against West Indies in Lauderhill. One of the first things Ravi did on arrival was to call Virat and Rohit to his room and impress upon them that for Indian cricket to be healthy, they needed to be on the same page. ‘Whatever happened on social media, that’s all fine, but you two are the most senior cricketers so this must stop,’ Ravi said in his typical no-nonsense manner. ‘I want you to put all this behind you and get together for us to move forward'”.
The former fielding coach was all praise for Ravi Shastri’s man-management. Both Rohit and Kohli buried the hatchet and got on with their careers. The bond still remains despite Rohit taking over as all-format captain from Virat in 2021.
