Even though they lost valiantly, it scarcely mattered since Federer and Nadal gave a performance to remember. Federer and Nadal, two of the best players of all time, have a rivalry in men’s tennis that is unmatched. Together, they have won 42 Grand Slam tournaments. And during the course of their 40 meetings, they challenged one another to raise their game to the next level.

Following his swansong, Nadal and Federer hugged warmly as their emotions got better of them. While Federer was crying, the cameras also caught some of Nadal’s tears. The iconic duo, who have provided tennis fans with some spectacular moments over the previous 20 years, couldn’t hold back their tears.

While India pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Twitter wrote: “Endless memories, a role model par excellence and pure class in everything he did. Thank you, @rogerfederer.”

Federer’s illustrious career ended in defeat early on Saturday morning. The 41-year-old could not hold back the tears in front of 17,500 fans at the O2 Arena as he paid tribute to his parents, wife Mirka, two sets of twins, close friends, coaches and colleagues.

For the unknown, the pairing of Federer and Nadal squandered a match point as they were defeated 4-6 7-6 11-9 by Americans Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock.
