However, Pant will need to go back to the hospital next month again. He will have his second surgery on the torn ACL in his right knee. Pant tore all three ligaments on his right knee in the accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team successfully reconstructed Pant’s posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in a marathon three-hour surgery. But he will need further surgery for his anterior cruciate ligament in a month.

“He will need another surgery in about a month. Doctors will decide when it is right to have the 2nd surgery. BCCI Medical team is in constant touch with Dr Pardiwala and the hospital. We hope to see him back on the field soon,” the official added.

When will Rishabh Pant Return? – Pant’s return to the cricket field depends on his rehab. After the second surgery, Pant will need around 4-5 months to recover completely. Post that, he will begin his rehab and training. It will take another 2 months to be fit to resume full-fledged practice.

His recovery timeline will make it almost impossible to come back before the ODI World Cup in October. To put it bluntly, he will miss most of 2023 recovering and will miss the World Cup 2023.

“We are not even thinking of his comeback now. Focus is on his recovery. It’s still too early to say when he will return. As per his latest medical reports, it will take 8-9 months. But we are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that he will be fit in time for the World Cup. But it looks highly unlikely,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Meanwhile, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has said that India will miss Rishabh Pant dearly in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

“Australia’s confidence is further boosted by a serious injury to Rishabh Pant. It means the wicketkeeper-batter’s gregarious personality will be sorely missed. The main thing India will lose from Pant’s unavailability is an excellent run rate, which came from his belligerent aggression. No one can replace Pant’s desire to dominate bowlers,” Ian Chappell wrote in his column on ESPNCricinfo.
