A scare ran through the Indian camp during the 1st T20I against South Africa on Friday. When the Protea women were cruising through after being put to bat first, Richa Ghosh sustained a horrific injury. The impact seemed to cause concussion-like symptoms, forcing her off the field.
What happened with Richa Ghosh?
In the 16th over, Ghosh dropped a straightforward catch off Pooja Vastrakar’s bowling, but the incident took a worrying turn as the ball appeared to hit her on the jaw. The replays showed Ghosh had time to settle under the skier but couldn’t pouch it.
Ghosh displayed signs of concussion, including dizziness and neck pain, and was immediately taken off the field by the physio. This led to the activation of the concussion substitute rule, a relatively new addition to women’s cricket.
The BCCI confirmed on Twitter that Sajeevan Sajana replaced Ghosh as the concussion substitute. In a quick update, BCCI Women account wrote, “Sajeevan Sajana has been named the concussion substitute for Richa Ghosh, who is suffering from neck pain and dizziness due to an on-field injury. She has been sent for further scans & the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring her progress.”
Uma Chetry took the gloves for the remaining 4.3 overs of the South African innings. The visitors racked up a formidable score of 189/4, with Tanzim Brits hammering 81 alone.
