Rohit Sharma has doubled down on his retirement statement. After lifting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the India cricket team captain confirmed that he’s not hanging up his boots right now. Reports suggested that Rohit Sharma would announce his ODI retirement and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had decided they’ll tell the opener to step away from 50-over cricket.
No retirement for Rohit Sharma
One can’t forget that Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is. After winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Indian captain decided that he’s done all in the shortest format of the game. But Rohit has yet to win an ODI World Cup. That’s why he seems keen to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
That call won’t be his own entirely. Right now, his form in 50-over cricket is good, but will it remain that way for the next 24 months? No one, including Rohit Sharma, can answer that.
“Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup. There’s no point in making such statements right now. Realistically, I have always taken my career one step at a time. I don’t like thinking too far into the future, and I haven’t done so in the past either. For now, I am enjoying my cricket and the time I spend with this team. I hope my teammates enjoy my presence as well. That’s all that matters at this point,” Rohit Sharma told Star Sports.
