“Requested ‘Ram Siya Ram’ to be played” Keshav Maharaj reveals ahead of SA20 2024

Looking ahead, Maharaj is set to lead the Durban Super Giants in the upcoming SA20 tournament, commencing on January 10.

South African spin maestro Keshav Maharaj provided insight into the unique soundtrack accompanying his recent appearances during the home series against India. The 33-year-old revealed that the devotional song ‘Ram Siya Ram’ was a deliberate choice, playing every time he walked out to bat, both in red-ball and limited-overs formats.

Keshav Maharaj, who had a stellar series against India, securing five scalps across formats, attributed the choice of the spiritual track to his personal connection with it. The left-arm spinner expressed gratitude to God for his guidance and opportunities throughout his cricketing career.

In a recent statement to PTI, Keshav Maharaj said, “Obviously, something that I put forward to the media lady and requested that song to be played. For me, God has been my greatest blessing, giving me guidance and opportunity. So, it’s the least that I can do, and it also just gets you in your zone. It’s a nice feeling walking out (into the ground) to hear ‘Ram Siya Ram’ playing in the background.”

The unusual musical preference gained attention when India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul acknowledged it during a conversation with Maharaj on the field. Viral videos captured moments where ‘Ram Siya Ram’ played as Maharaj entered the playing arena.

Looking ahead, Maharaj is set to lead the Durban Super Giants in the upcoming SA20 tournament, commencing on January 10. The team, which finished fifth in the previous season, will strive for an improved performance under Maharaj’s leadership.

The Durban Super Giants boast a formidable squad for the 2024 SA20, including notable players like Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder, and David Willey. With Maharaj at the helm, the team aims to make a significant impact in the tournament, starting their campaign against MI Cape Town on January 11. As Maharaj leads on the field, the spiritual echoes of ‘Ram Siya Ram’ add a unique touch to his cricketing journey.
