Recapping Virat Kohli swansong! India’s ‘humiliating’ last tour to South Africa 2 years ago

As India is all set to tour South Africa, let’s take a look at what happened the last time IND vs SA tour took place 2 years ago

India is all set to tour South Africa for a two-match Test series and a 3-match ODI and T20I series, commencing from December 10. The last time the Men in Blue took on the Proteas in South Africa two years ago, SA displayed absolute dominance.

A lot has changed over the last two years, with IND then being led by Virat Kohli in Tests and KL Rahul in ODIs. For the present IND vs SA tour, Rohit Sharma will lead the side in Tests while KL Rahul will captain the side for ODIs. The T20I side will be led by the dynamic Suryakumar Yadav.

India were completely trumped by the Proteas in their last tour to South Africa two years ago. The Men in Blue, led by Kohli, lost the three-match Test series 2-1. In ODIs, India – led by KL Rahul – succumbed to an embarrassing 3-0 whitewash. In total, it was a tour to forget for India.

India managed to win the first Test at the Centurion, with KL Rahul being named as the POTM. Top-scoring for the side in the first innings with a 123-run knock, India posted a massive total of 327 runs at the end of the first innings. South Africa were then bundled out for just 197 runs, with Shami picking up a fifer. In the 2nd innings, India were bowled out for 174 runs. However, the visiting side responded with an emphatic performance with the ball, as India won the game by a massive 113-run margin.

In the second Test at Johannesburg, South Africa were the dominant side as they snatched home a 7-wicket victory. Dean Elgar was named the POTM for his unbeaten 96-run knock in the 2nd innings that allowed SA to race to victory.

In the third Test, the dismay continued for India as they lost the game yet again. South Africa once again managed a seven-wicket win over the visitors as they sealed the Test series 2-1. Keegan Petersen displayed his prowess with the bat in both the innings, with scores of 72 and 82 and was deemed as the POTM.

It was during this decider that one of Virat Kohli’s infamous moments occurred. Kohli was seen screaming into the stump mic after a controversial DRS decision that gave Dean Elgar a reprieve. Elgar was trapped by Ashwin for a LBW, the decision which was overturned after DRS. The then Indian skipper was seen kicking the ground in disgust and screaming into the stump mic, upset with the decision. Ashwin, along with other Indian players, was visibly upset too with the DRS call.

In the ODI series, the Indian side led by KL Rahul faced a humiliating 3-0 whitewash. In the first ODI at Paarl, India failed to chase down the 296-run target in 50 overs, with Van der Dussen being named the POTM. South Africa won the game by 31 runs.

Quinton de Kock and Janeman Malan got off the home side to a strong start with the bat as the run-chase began in the 2nd ODI. With India setting a target of 287 runs, the Proteas managed to chase down the target in 48 overs. De Kock was named the POTM for his 78-run knock that was studded with seven 4s and three 6s.

The final nail in the coffin was hammered in the 3rd ODI as South Africa grabbed a 4-run victory to complete the 3-0 whitewash. India failed to chase down the 288-run target despite KL Rahul and Virat Kohli scoring half-centuries each. Quinton de Kock once again was named the POTM for his 124-run knock that guided the Proteas to a commendable total which India failed to chase down. He was also named the Player of the Series.
