Royal Challengers Bangalore’s hot pick in the IPL 2024 auction, Tom Curran, has been suspended for 4 games in the Big Bash League (BBL) following an altercation. Curran, who plays for the Sydney Sixers, was handed the suspension after an altercation with the umpire during the warm-up.
Before the Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes match on December 11 in Launceston, Tom Curran had a disagreement with the umpire about his practice run-up that got out of hand. The all-rounder was found guilty of intimidating the umpire and was suspended for 4 matches.
Following the altercation, match referee Bob Parry charged Curran under Article 2.17 of the code of conduct for “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire, match referee, or medical personnel, whether by language or conduct (including gestures) during a match”.

Cricket Australia’s statement on Tom Curran’s BBL suspension
After the incident, Cricket Australia (CA) released a statement on Curran’s 4-match ban in the ongoing BBL 13.
“The umpire took position next to the stumps, blocking Curran from approaching the pitch, and gestured to Curran to move away from the pitch,” the statement read.
“Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the umpire to move away from the pitch.
“Curran then attempted to perform a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran. The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision.”
Sydney Sixers back Tom Curran, to appeal against suspension
Sydney Sixers’ head, Rachael Haynes, has vehemently denied any disorderly conduct and decided to appeal the ban placed on Tom Curran.
“Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision. We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field,” said, stressing that neither the club nor Curran will make a statement until the verdict of the appeal has been announced.
