RCB star Dinesh Karthik set to end illustrious IPL career after 2024 season

Veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik is gearing up for his final Indian Premier League season, marking the end of an era for the 38-year-old cricketer. This news comes as he prepares to join Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

Remarkable IPL Journey

Dinesh Karthik holds a unique distinction in the IPL, being one of only seven players to have participated in every season since its inception in 2008.

He has played for six different franchises throughout his IPL career, starting with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals 2008-14), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings – 2011), Mumbai Indians (2012-13), Gujarat Lions (2016-17), Kolkata Knight Riders (2018-21) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2015, 2022-present). Throughout his journey, he has only missed a mere two matches, showcasing his dedication and commitment to the league.

The ace WK-batter will now retire from IPL after 2024 season, as per ESPNcricinfo.

Dinesh Karthik IPL career has been a rollercoaster ride, with moments of brilliance and periods of struggle. He enjoyed a stellar season with RCB in 2022, playing a crucial role as a finisher with his aggressive batting, scoring 330 runs at a strike rate of over 183. This performance earned him a place in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

However, the 2023 season proved to be a challenge for the veteran batsman, with his form dipping significantly. His future in international cricket also remains uncertain, with a decision expected soon.

Looking beyond the playing field

While Karthik prepares to bid farewell to the IPL as a player, he has already begun venturing into a second career.

He started working as a cricket commentator in 2021, gradually establishing himself in the broadcasting industry. He is currently providing commentary in the ongoing India-England Test series.

A Legacy of Excellence: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the IPL, having scored over 4500 runs with 20 half-centuries in 240 matches. He is also the second-highest wicket-taker as a keeper behind MS Dhoni, with 133 dismissals, including 36 stumpings. As a captain, he led Kolkata Knight Riders for 37 matches, achieving 21 wins and 21 losses.
