“RCB has made absolute right call”: ‘Leader material’ Rajat Patidar gets thumbs up from coach, mentor

Making Rajat Patidar RCB's new captain was the right choice & he'll bring the team closer to an IPL title, his coach and mentor feel

Former Madhya Pradesh captain Devendra Bhundela has claimed that RCB has made the right call in naming Rajat Patidar as captain for IPL 2025. The MP batter, who has been with the franchise for years now, was named Faf du Plessis’ successor on Thursday. The 31-year-old will be aiming to lead RCB to their first-ever IPL title in IPL 2025 as he takes over the reins of the team.

Patidar “not boss material but leader material”

In an interview with News18, Bhundela said that Patidar has the captaincy talent and backed him to work harmoniously with his RCB teammates. The MP batter’s batting coach Amay Khurasiya explained that the former was very calm & poised. He added that Rajat was more of a leader material than a boss and that he will not impose himself on anyone.

RCB has made the absolute right call in making him the captain. He’ll do well, he has the captaincy talent in him. He’s very good with his teammates, helps everyone, and motivates everyone,” Bhundela said.

Further, Khurasiya backed Patidar to get RCB closer to the elusive IPL trophy.

He’s not boss material, he’s leader material. He’s a man who knows what respect is required, what is respect for the people who have played for the country for 10, 15 and 20 years. So he will not impose himself on anyone in terms of what he is today, and he is the last man who will be arrogant about his success. He will not just give respect, he will give a lot of respect and reverence. I repeat, reverence,” Khurasiya said.

Rajat Patidar came in to RCB in IPL 2022 as an injury replacement for Luvnith Sisodia for a base price of Rs 20 lakhs. Despite missing a full season in 2023 due to an injury, the MP batter was consistent in his performances, amassing 333 runs in 2022 and 395 runs in 2024.
