India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lauded Australia for showing tactical masterclass in the World Cup final against Team India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.
Ashwin said that Australia’s win against the Men in Blue was not luck but a result of their tactical brilliance.
“Let me make it clear, Australia did not win because of destiny or luck. They were tactically outstanding in the final. I watched their performance in the final with absolute fascination,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “
Ashwin revealed that he was surprised when Australian skipper Pat Cummins opted to field first and asked Australia’s chief selector George Bailey about the decision during the mid-innings.
“Australia totally deceived me personally. I had a chat with George Bailey during the mid innings and I asked him why didn’t you guys bat first like you always do. He answered back, ‘We have played IPL & bilateral series here a lot. Red soil disintegrates but not the black soil & it gets better under lights. There is no impact of dew on red soil but black soil gives good turn in afternoon & then it will become a concrete in night. This is our experience.’ “, Ashwin revealed.
Final was a tactical masterclass by Pat Cummins: Ashwin
Ashwin also heaped praise on Australian skipper Pat Cummins and said the pacer excuted his bowling plan superbly.
“Final was a tactical masterclass by Cummins, he had 4-5 fielding setup, similar to an off spinner, hitting stump line – he bowled only 3 balls in the 6 meter mark towards the stump line as not allowing batters to drive – he bowled all overs without mid-off, a masterclass“, Ashwin added.
Australia ended Team India’s unbeaten run in the World Cup with a 6-wicket win in the final. Rohit and Co. were dismissed for 240 runs on a slow Ahmedabad track.
Travis Head then stole the show in the second innings as the opening batter slammed a stunning hundred to take Australia to their 6th World Cup title.
