- When Javed said ‘Tu baar baar udhar kya deke raha hai?’ –
In a funny conversation with Javed Miandad during the final, the Pakistan legend took a dig at Ravi and claimed he won’t win the Audi.
Ravi with 15-20 runs needed for India to win opened up on the incident – “Tu baar baar udhar kya deke raha hai” (Why are you looking there repeatedly?) he said in his characteristic lisp. “Gaadi ko kyun dekh raha hai?!” (Why are you looking at the car). Voh nahi milne waali hai tere ko! (You are not going to get it!).”
“That’s when I had one proper look at it, and told him, “Javed, meri taraf hi aa Rahi hai! (It’s coming my way, only!)”.
And the rest is history as they say as Ravi had the keys in his hand in next few minutes.
2. 10000 people at the docking port-
Ravi Shastri’s AUDI Stories: Ravi Shastri’s AUDI at the portWhile winning the AUDI was one thing, bringing it back was another thing. Thankfully for Ravi it was then Prime Minister of India who gave him the luxury to bring the car duty free through to India.
He added, “At the docks, there were 8,000-10,000 people to have a look at it as it came out from the container of the ship. I refused to drive the car as I was wary that I might bang into people as I still wasn’t fully hands-on with that Audi.
“I had someone from Audi, a proper driver, to get it home. All along the way, people were honking from bikes and it was quite a celebration and I still don’t know how it reached my home without a scratch.”
Nowadays incidents like these rarely happen, but still attracting a crowd of around 10000 for a glimpse of AUDI was a clear indicator on how Ravi Shastri roused to fame.
3. Completing a full circle of life with daughter Aleka-
Ravi added, “The best thing about this is that my daughter saw the car for the first time ever in her life. She sat in it for the first time. In the days to come, I shall take her for a spin in it. In some sense, the circle of life would be complete.”
Ravi’s daughter Aleka would have probably loved to be part fo the AUDI journey, but it her father’s achievement at the MCG in 1985 that truly reflects as one of the most iconic moments in Indian sports history.
And talking of the prize, the gold-coloured Audi will probably go down as one of the most famous prize assets.
